If you have
an RV and are looking at portable RV generators for powering up your air
conditioner, TV, refrigerator, etc., my independent review can help you find
the perfect model. Without wasting time
The most popular-sized portable RV generators are rated between 3,000 to 5,000 max watts. This is the best size to give you adequate power, but are still easy to move and are economical.
You can check out my 5 #1 pick for a 3,000 - 5,000 max watt generator at the right price: the DuroMax4400 portable generator .
You’ll get 4,400 max watts/3,500 continuous watts, a 7 HP air cooled OHV gas engine and the 4 gallon gas tank should last you for 8 hours of running time. I love the easy electric start and the Never Flat Wheels. (If you’ve ever tried to move a generator with a flat tire, you know what I mean.) The DuroMax is a great generator value.

The first thing you want to consider is how big, or how powerful, of a generator you need. The best thing is to think about your biggest RV appliance because it will take the most wattage. And that’s usually your air conditioner unit or heater unit.
There are two generator wattage ratings: maximum and rated. Maximum wattage is the power that a portable RV generator can briefly supply to air conditioners and other appliances that have electric motors. Electric motors need more electricity to start. And a lot less electricity to continue running.
wattage is the amount of electricity the generator can supply for long periods
of time. Like hours & days.
want look at units that give you more than the minimum maximum wattage you need to start up your air
conditioner. Or heating unit. And a little more wattage for TV, lights, etc.
Here’s an example: an averaged sized air conditioner is about 15,500 BTU’s and it needs 3,500 watts of electricity to start. And the air conditioning only needs about 1,800 watts to keep running.
bought a 4,000 watt unit, and your air conditioner was
running, you could also run your refrigerator (180 running watts) and flat
screen TV (200 running watts) too. And some lights.
As you look around, don’t forget to pay attention to the noise rating! You don’t want to get a unit that’s so loud that you can’t sleep, hold a conversation or bother your neighbors.
You’ll see noise ratings in decibels or dBA. The new style inverter generators are well known for their very low noise level. You can find one with a noise rating of 50 to 60 decibels which is just about as loud as a normal conversation. For comparison’s sake, the sound of a running lawn mower is 100 decibels.
Lastly, check out the weight of any model you’re thinking about buying. Make sure it’s light enough that you can move it around easily. And light enough to lift & store in your RV. Some models are designed with built-in handles & some models have wheels.
