Buying Check List for a Portable Inverter Generator

There are important features & ratings you should pay attention to as you shop around & compare models:

Noise: always look for the noise level rating which is stated in decibels or dBA. Trust me, don’t buy one that doesn’t have a noise level rating! The last thing you want is a noisy inverter generator that drowns out the sounds of nature, conversation, music, etc.

It weighs 122 lbs, is easy to move - and I love the Never Flat tires!

Duromax Duel Fuel XP10000EH

I recommend this monster Dual Fuel Duromax XP10000EH to power up all of your home's important systems, including heat/ central AC, with 10,000 max watts. You can run this heavy duty Duromax with gas or your extra grill propane tanks. Handy! It has a quality 18HP engine, easy key start and weighs 265 lbs.

I personally recommend looking for models that have a noise rating of 50 to 60 dBA. That’s about a loud as a normal conversation. You can compare that to 100 dBA which is the noise level of a running lawn mower.

Power: You’ll also want to pay attention to the power output of an portable inverter generator. The power rating is stated in watts. And the higher the wattage, the more power. But pay attention to the fact that there are two power ratings: rated power and maximum power.

Rated power tells you the amount of electricity that is put out over a long period of time. Hours or days. And maximum power means the most amount of electricity an inverter generator can supply for a short amount of time. Because all electrical motors in appliances & tools need more electricity to start up, the maximum rating tells you how much of a power surge it can supply for this.

You’ll see a lot of portable inverter generators that have up to 2,000 watts that are perfectly designed for powering up your TV, fan, small lights, electric grills, coffee pots, etc. And then there bigger models – 3,000 watts or more – and they can provide power to just about anything around your campsite, RV, boat, etc.

Run Time: Run time means the maximum time you can run it without needing to put more gas in the tank. As you probably already know, how long you can run it, without refills, depends on how many appliances or tools you have hooked up to it. And how efficient the generator is. And the size of the gas tank, of course.

Weight: And don’t forget to check the weight! You definitely want to choose a model that is light enough for you to comfortable move around. And I just want to let you know that when a generator has a weight rating, it’s call “dry weight”, which means the weight with an empty fuel tank.
